    asti bhāgīrathī-tīre gṛdhrakūṭa-nāmni parvate mahān parkaṭīvṛka: /

is on-Ganges-bank on-Gṛdhrakūṭa-moutain large fig-tree

 

    tasya koṭare daiva-durvipākāt galita-nakha-nayana:

of-it in-hollow from-fates-hard-doom having-lost-claws-eyes

jaradgava-nāmā gṛdhra: prativasati

Jaradgava vulture dwells

 

    atha kṛpayā tat jīvanāya tad-vṛka-vāsina: pakiṇa:

now with-pity that for-life of-that-tree-roosting birds

svāhārāt kicit kicid uddhṛtya tasmai dadati

from-own-food a-little having-taken to-him give

 

    tenāsau jīvati

by-that he-lives

 

    atha kadācit dīrghakarṇāmā mārjāra: pakiśāvakān bhakitum tatra āgata: /

now one-day Dīrghakarṇa cat young-birds to-eat there arrived

 

    tata: tam - āyāntam dṛṭvā, pakiśāvakai: bhayārtai: kolāhala: kṛta: /

thence him approaching having-seen, by-young-birds-fearful clamour made

 

    tat śrutvā jaradgavena: uktam / ka: ayam āyāti /

that having-heard Jaradgava said , who this aproaches ?

 

    dīrghakarṇa: gṛdhram avalokya sa-bhayam āha /

Dīrghakarṇa vulture having-perceived with-fear said

 

hata: asmi /

oh lost i-am

 

    adhunā asya samnidhāne palāyitum akama: /

now of-him in-presence to-escape unable

 

    tad yathā bhavitavyam tad bhavatu tāvat viśvāsam utpādyā

therefore as it-is-to-be that let-be first-condidence having-produced

asya samīpam upagacchāmi / iti ālocya tamupasṛtyā abravīta

of-him to-proximity i-approach thus having-reflected having-near-gone he said

-     āya ! tvām abhivande /

birds all always of-me in-presence praise

vulture said cat certainly meat-liking, young-birds and

atra nivasanti tena aham evam bravīmi /

    tat śrutvā mārjāra: bhūmim spṛśṭvā karṇau spṛśati brūte ca /

that having-heard, cat ground having-touched, ears touches and says

 

    mayā dharma-śāstram śrutvā vīta-rageṇa

by-me law-book having-heard with-gone-passions

idam dukaram vratam cāndrāyaṇam adhyavasitam /

this difficult vow Chāndrāyana undertaken

koṭaram ānīya pratyaham khādati /

to-hollow having-brought daily he-eats

 

    yeām apatyāni khāditāni tai: śokārtai: vilapadbhi:

of-whom young-ones eaten by-those-sorrow-pained-wailing
