    ekadā dakiṇāraṇye kaścit tāpasa: avasat /

once in-a-southern-forest some ascetic dwelled

 

    pupai: phalai: mūlai: ca upājīvat /

by-flowers-fruits-roots lived-on

 

    vāram vāram tu vanam tyaktvā samīpasthagrāmān

but sometimes forest having-left nearby-village

āgamya tatra bhikām acarat /

having-come there gone-a-begging

 

    yad bhojanam tasmai pāpasāya dattam

food which to-him of-bad given

tat tena kṛtājalinā ādattam /

that with-the-salute-jesture recieved

 

    ya: āhāra: tena teu grāmeu labdha:

food which in-these-villages obtained

sa: antimasya grāmasya paryantam ānīya tatra tena khādita: /

he of-last-village outskirts having-brought there with-that ate

 

    ekasmin divase svaparṇaśālām pratyāgantum

in-this-day own-leaf-hut returned

tam araṇyam praviśya sa tāpasa: kudhākulena vyāghreṇa dṛṭa: /

the forest having-entered the ascetic by-hungry-agitated -tiger was-seen

 

    tasmin eva kaṇe vānaragaṇena tam vyāghram

in-that-instant by-monkey the tiger

avalokya kolāhala: kṛta: /

having-looked-at noise was-made

 

    teām śabdai: udvignacitta: tāpasa ūrdhvam dṛṭvā

of-those by-sounds ascetic upwards having-seen

vyāghram vṛkaśākhāyām avalokya paramam bhayam agacchat /

tiger in-tree-branch having-perceived formost fear came

 

    ādai bhayena acala: tatra eva sthitvā

at-first with-fear immobile there having-stood

tata: sahasā māyā idam sarvam iti

thence immediately illusion this all

vedāntadarśane svaguruṇā upadiṭam smṛtvā

in-doctrine by-own-guru lesson having-remembered

 

tīvratapolabdhabalena vṛkasya adhastāt māyāmṛgam janayitvā

by-intense-austerity-obtained-power under illusion-animal having-produced

 

ātmānam eva adṛṭarūpam kṛtvā

soul unseen-form having-made-done

 

parṇaśālām śanai: śanai: apāgacchat

leaf-hut slowly went-off

 

    tadantaram vyāghra: māyāmṛgam dṛṭvā

afterwards tiger illusion-deer having-seen

vṛkaśākhāyā: avaplutya tam mṛgam anvadhāvat /

from-tree-branch having-jumped-down the animal ran-after

 

    araṇyasya paryantam dhāvitvā

of-forest outskirts having-ran

ya: mṛga: tāpasaprabhāvena kṛta:

deer which by-austerity-power was-made

sa sapadi antardhānam agacchat /

he immediately disappearance went

 

    mṛga: kutra gata iti cintayitvā

deer where went having-thought

vismayānvita uccai: śabdam kṛtvā

loud sound having-made

 

sa vyāghra: tasmāt vanād bahi: gatvā

the tiger from-that-forest outside having-gone

 

anyad vanam praviśya tatra anyam mṛgam anvadrāvat //

another forest having-entered there another deer ran-after
